Today, I had arranged an all day tour with Hugo of Inside Lisbon. We have toured with him the last 3 times we have been to Lisbon and he is wonderful. Since we have a long time in Lisbon, we decided to tour to Fatima and Obidos.
Our first stop of the day was at Fatima. On May 13, 1917, the first apparition described as "brighter than the sun, shedding rays of light clearer and stronger than a crystal goblet filled with the most sparkling water and pierced by the burning rays of the sun". Our lady appeared to Lucia Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto. Further apparitions occurred for seveal months always on the 13th of the month.
Plaza where over a million pilgrims gather each May 13th and October 13th on the anniversaries of the initial apparitions to witness processions of the statue of Our Lady of Fatima.
Pilgrims completing pilgrimages to the Chapel of Apparitions
Chapel of Apparitions, built on the site where the Fatima apparitions were reported.
Our next stop was in the little town of Batalha where we visited the Batalha Monastery felt to be one of Europe's greatest Gothic masterpieces and is protected as a World Heritage monument.
Then it was on to Nazare, a picturesque seaside village, on the Atlantic coast with magnificent views from the cliffs.
Our last stop was at the walled village of Obidos. The 13th cntury castle was constructed as a present from King Dinis to his bride and thenceforth it has been offered by princes to their brides. The castle is now a 5* hotel.
